Maternity Services

Having a baby is one of the most exciting and rewarding times in a woman's life, and San Angelo Community Medical Center is dedicated to providing expectant mothers and newborns with quality care during this special time. Our maternity services are provided by obstetricians, labor and delivery specialists, nurses and other caring professionals in a welcoming, comfortable environment.

The Williams Family Center is designed with mother and baby in mind. Our inviting facility and programs are designed to support you throughout pregnancy, labor and delivery, and recovery - including extensive childbirth education programs and certified lactation consultants. Our birthing rooms are designed specifically to accommodate your needs from admission to the initial postpartum period. For those new moms requiring cesarean sections, a fully-equipped operating room is just down the hall in the Labor & Delivery unit.

In the maternity center you will find:

  • A family-centered care model
  • Level II Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU)
  • 24/7 dedicated OB anesthesia
  • 24/7 neonatology service
  • All private mother/baby rooms
  • Infant security system
  • Dedicated surgical sites of obstetrical procedures
  • OB concierge and lactation services
  • Free prepared parenting classes
  • Special in-room dining experience with your significant other
  • A handcrafted belly button made by the late Roger Allen of the Chicken Farm Art Center

Level II Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU)
For those babies who arrive earlier than planned or need special care, San Angelo Community Medical Center offers a Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to provide those little ones with the specialized care they require. Staffed by the region's only neonatology group, the 10-bed NICU is a quiet place with round-the-clock care by specially trained neonatal nurses. Parents may visit their babies in the NICU regularly. Rocking chairs are positioned next to every bed so parents may spend time with their baby.

Managing Labor Pains
At San Angelo Community Medical Center, we offer the region’s only low-intervention birth program focused on providing women with choices in their birthing experience, including options for labor pain management. Our specially designed labor suites create a place where women with low-risk pregnancies may have a positive labor experience. Talk to your obstetrician about whether our low-risk intervention birth program is right for you. For higher-risk patients, some of our less interventional components may be able to be incorporated into your births where appropriate.

Low-intervention birth tools may include:

  • Warm water labor in a labor tub
  • Deep breathing and relaxation techniques
  • Soothing music and ambient lighting
  • Labor ball and peanut ball, which help with descent of baby and assist in comfort positions
  • Walking and staying in constant motion with the aid of our telemetry fetal monitoring
  • Various labor bed positions for comfort
  • Squat bar for alternative pushing positions

Medicinal approaches include:

  • Intravenous pain medication
  • Epidural anesthesia - Our dedicated OB anesthesia team has collectively placed over 20,000 epidurals
  • Caesarean delivery with enhanced pain management

If you have questions about labor pain management, please call: 1-325-947-6369.
